Carbon Sequestration in The Ohio Valley

Carbon Sequestration in West Virginia: Risks, Costs, and Unanswered Questions

Carbon sequestration has been promoted as a climate solution in West Virginia, particularly in regions with existing fossil fuel infrastructure. In practice, much of the captured carbon dioxide is proposed for use in enhanced oil and gas recovery, raising concerns about whether sequestration efforts reduce emissions or extend fossil fuel dependence. Carbon capture and storage projects require significant energy, water, and pipeline infrastructure, introducing new environmental, safety, and land-use risks for nearby communities. Long-term storage reliability, liability for leaks, and the lack of proven effectiveness at scale remain unresolved, placing public resources and environmental health at risk while diverting attention from cleaner, more sustainable economic alternatives for the state. eco-friendly practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Carbon sequestration is often promoted as a climate solution, but many proposals raise unresolved questions about effectiveness, risk, and long-term impacts on communities.

Carbon sequestration involves capturing carbon dioxide from industrial sources and transporting it for underground storage. In West Virginia, proposals often rely on existing fossil fuel infrastructure and may include using captured CO₂ for enhanced oil or gas recovery, raising questions about whether these projects reduce emissions or prolong fossil fuel extraction.

Carbon sequestration projects can require extensive pipeline networks, injection wells, and long-term monitoring. These systems pose potential risks related to leaks, land disturbance, property rights, water resources, and public safety. Long-term liability for stored carbon and the impacts on nearby communities remain unresolved.

While small-scale projects exist, carbon sequestration has not been proven effective or reliable at the scale needed to meaningfully reduce emissions. Questions remain about long-term storage integrity, high energy demands, public costs, and whether investment in sequestration diverts resources from cleaner, more sustainable solutions. Ohio Valley Environmental Advocates is a nonpartisan organization and does not engage in political lobbying. However, we do advocate for policies and practices that align with our mission of environmental protection and conservation.
